Strangers in a Strange Land
Desla, City of Ruins
Desla, Q’Yen’s home city, is a humid urban sprawl with a slow pace of life and a tense, loaded atmosphere. The climate is always warm to hot, and the Rishmel River, which cuts through the city, contributes to the oppressive humidity. The city is no stranger to street fights or back-alley murders. The citizens, who are accustomed to this hostile environment and whose eyes reveal the stress of constantly being on edge, strive to find some sense of conviviality and joy, therefore parties and festivals are very abundant, often springing up at the faintest hint of a reason. The flora is generally tropical and colorful, nourished by the fertile land and abundant sun.
Desla is ruled by the Archregent, Phestik. The rightful ruler, Lord Alem, has been mysteriously ill for as long as anyone can remember. Many question whether or not the heirless Lord is even still alive, as no one has seen him for over 100 years. During that time, Desla acquired its moniker as the City of Ruins. While it was originally known for its vast white walls, ornate towers, and gleaming spires, Archregent Phestik has allowed the city to fall into abject disrepair and blight, focusing completely on amassing riches and military might. The citizens of Desla do what they can to restore the once beautiful city, but their efforts fall short of what is required to maintain such an immense space.
Desla is still known as a major hub for trade and the city continues to prosper, although the citizens see little of that prosperity, aside from what little they can squirrel away after taxes. Very few families enjoy the comforts of a financially stable life, and if a middle class exists at all, it is quite small, consisting mainly of the merchants who are able to take advantage of Desla’s well-situated trade routes.
